The manga ending was divisive. The anime knows it.
When Tite Kubo wrapped the Thousand-Year Blood War arc in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2016, the response was messy. Rushed pacing, off-screen defeats, and dangling threads left a decade of arguments in their wake. Kubo is directly supervising — and adding new material
This is the single biggest difference between The Calamity and the manga’s final chapters. Kubo isn’t a distant credited creator here; he has been embedded in production from storyboards through voice recording. Speaking at Jump Festa 2026, he confirmed he had signed off on nearly all storyboard material and that anime-original content was going into the finale — content he was personally curious to see realized.
Character designer Masashi Kudo went further in an interview, noting the final stretch would introduce not just new scenes but new characters that never appeared in the manga. For readers who followed the arc in Jump week to week, that means genuine surprises are on the table.
Expanded fights, starting with Hitsugaya vs. Gerard
Kubo has specifically flagged extra material for Toshiro Hitsugaya’s battle against Gerard Valkyrie — sequences he apparently had in mind while drawing but never fit onto the page. The manga’s version of that fight is one of the arc’s more frequently criticized stretches, so the expansion lands exactly where fans have been pointing.
Precedent: what Cours 2 and 3 already changed
This isn’t speculation. The pattern is established:
- Squad Zero’s redemption. In the manga, the Royal Guard were dispatched by the Schutzstaffel with much of the action off-screen. The Cour 2 finale rebuilt those battles from the ground up, finally showing why Squad Zero outranks the entire Gotei 13.
- Yhwach’s motive, clarified. The Cour 3 finale opened on an anime-original scene showing Ukitake’s Mimihagi reiatsu weakening — a narrative bridge explaining why Yhwach descends into the Seireitei, something the manga simply never spelled out.
- Tightened pacing. Some manga dialogue and side interactions have been trimmed to keep the adaptation moving, so “different” cuts both ways.
What to expect from the ending itself
The Calamity adapts the Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Is Ending closing chapters: the collapse of the Three Worlds after the Soul King’s death, Ichigo’s final confrontation with Yhwach at Wahrwelt, and his Horn of Salvation transformation.
